NEWPORT - Ruth (Brereton) Ratcliffe-Chrupcala, 90, of Harrison Avenue, Newport, formerly of Valley Lane, Portsmouth, died on Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Village House Nursing Home in Newport, RI. Born in Somerset, MA, the daughter of the late Roland E. and Hazel A. (Kirkwood) Brereton-Jackson, she was the wife of the late Chief Harold H. Ratcliffe, USN Retired.
Mrs. Ratcliffe had worked as a medical secretary at the former Truesdale Hospital in Fall River for nineteen years, before retiring in 1983. She was a former member and Past Matron of the former F.R. Chapter #191, Order of Eastern Star; Past Grand Officer of the MA Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star; former member of the Board of Directors of Massachusetts State Congress of Parents and Teachers; former member of the Executive Board of the Fall River Council of Parents and Teachers; former Ward Captain in the Women's Division of the Salvation Army, Fall River; Outstanding Den Mother of 1952 for the Massasoit Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Mrs. Ratcliffe leaves one son, Malcolm W. Chrupcala of Portsmouth, RI; two granddaughters, Maia Chrupcala of Newport, RI, and Marielle Chrupcala of Portsmouth, RI; two daughters-in-law, Seidy Jolly of Middletown, RI, and Nancy Paolino-Chrupcala of Portsmouth, RI; one step-son, Harold H. Ratcliffe, Jr., of Tiverton, RI; one step-daughter, Carole A. Graham of Little Compton, RI; two step-grandsons, Keith Ratcliffe of Miami, FL, and Kevin Ratcliffe of Tiverton, RI; and one step-granddaughter, Heather Smith of Newport, RI. She was the mother of the late Calvin S. Chrupcala.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2008, from 10:00-12:00 noon in THE HATHAWAY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, MA.
